LNG Refuelling

General

Natural Gas as a source of energy has regained growing importance through both increasing public and political attention. Major manufacturers for instance offer their commercial vehicles additionally as models powered by natural gas. The reasons for that are varied: cost-efficient transportation, low emission values and partly (a common) support of the Federal Government and communities / and State Governments. From a global perspective, natural gas prevails next to traditional sources of energy such as petrol and diesel oil. Natural gas is mainly used for power generation, in the industry as a hydrogen carrier for instance and as a fuel for ship and truck engines. The cost-efficient energy source is of special intereset in those areas in which a network-independent energy supply is needed respectively preferred. The rapid progression of natural gas applications (NG) motivated the expansion of our know-how in LNG- and L-CNG filling stations.

LNG filling stations

A typical FAS LNG filling station consists out of several components such as the LNG tank, specific cryogenic LNG pumps, LNG dispensers and further components that are required for a safe operation of the filling station and a constant filling process. Because the market does not offer any standardised vehicle tanks yet, the LNG dispensers differ. The filling process itself takes place under 5 – 8 bar ambient condition / filing pressure.

The LNG pumps offer two different applications: usage as a feed pump and as a submersible pump. Having/Using standard LNG filling station, the medium does not change its state of aggregation: It is transported, stored and filled as a liquid product under conditions from -150°C to -160°C. In order to utilise diverse physical conditions, FAS offers in addition to the standard LNG filling stations the (so-called) combined filling stations (LNG & L-CNG).

The FAS LNG filling station is designed for following applications:

The plant is equipped with all required components to guarantee a safe and stable operation and is modifiable at any given time.

The FAS LNG filling station consists out of following components:

  1. LNG/L-CNG storage tank
  2. LNG/L-CNG high-pressure piston pump for cryogenic temperature
  3. Control board & safety board and CNG pressure tank
  4. LNG dispenser
  5. Electric control unit & automation unit
LNG/L-CNG filling stations (combined filling stations)

Combined filling stations (LNG & L-CNG) offer the possibility to refuel vehicles with both LNG and CNG. But how does this work?

A combined filling station integrates two separate filling lines that share one storage tank. In the first filling line the already knwon LNG filling process takes place, during which the liquid LNG is piped into the vehicle at a 5-8 bar filling pressure via a dispenser. This process is different in the second fillig line: A special pump pressurises the ambient condition up to 250 – 300 bar and transports the liquid LNG to a high pressure vaporiser in which the LNG changes its aggregate state and turns into a gas (compressed state). The medium is now gaseous und moves with a pressure of 250 – 300 bar. Thus, simply a commercially available CNG dispenser is required for the filling process in ordert o refuel any vehicles with an CNG tank.

The FAS LNG/L-CNG filling station (combined fillin station) is designed for following applications:

  • LNG refuellling of storage tanks
  • LNG storage
  • Pressure increase of LNG up to 5-8 bar
  • Vehicle refuelling with liquid natural gas (LNG) by means of a LNG dispenser
  • Pressure increase of LNG up to 200-350 bar
  • Change from liquid natural gas (LNG) to compressed CNG
  • Vehicle refuelling with compressed natural gas (CNG) by means of CNG dispenser

The plant is equipped with all required components to guarantee a safe and stable operation and is modifiable at any given time.

The FAS LNG filling station consists out of following components:
